Dentures & Partials

Need a cost-effective way to replace your missing teeth? Dentures or partial dentures could be for you.

Dentures are a specific area of dentistry focusing on restoring missing or unsightly teeth back to a natural looking, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing state. All dentists attempt to preserve as many of your natural teeth as possible, to achieve an authentic looking repair, while maintaining or improving your surrounding bone and gum tissue.

Having a full set of healthy white teeth can completely change your quality of life. When you are missing quite a few of your teeth your social situations can become stressful and even embarrassing if you feel it necessary to hide your smile.

Dentures have been a long-standing option for patients looking to replace either partial or even full arches of their teeth. Dentures will protect exposed gums, increase the functionality of your mouth with regards to biting, chewing, and speaking, and will allow you to show off a newly confident healthy smile.

Our team at DC Dental Spa are patient and proficient with deliberate thoroughness when it comes to your oral care, and this includes either full or partial dentures.  The latest in technology advancements are used in our clinic and the embracing and friendly atmosphere will help us evaluate any dental problems you might have. Call 202-333-9282 for an initial consultation and let us help you determine if full or partial dentures will improve your quality of life.

Are You a Candidates for Dentures?

If you are experiencing any of the following situations you may be a perfect candidate for denture treatments:

  • You are missing most of your natural teeth.
  • You are experiencing severe decay which is requiring extraction.
  • The lack of jawbone integrity to support dental implants.
  • You have receding gums due to your age or a disease.

The Different Types of Dentures

You do not have to be missing all your teeth to get dentures. There are several types of dentures available If you are seeking a replacement option for missing teeth in multiple stages of treatment:

  • Full Sets: When most people initially think of dentures, they most often are referring to a complete or full set. If you indeed receive a full set of dentures you are missing all your teeth from decay or damage, which requires a full mouth of replacement artificial teeth to achieve a healthy smile.
  • Partial Sets: If you still have some healthy natural teeth or are considering the possibility of dental implants in your near future, you can exercise the option of receiving a partial set of dentures. These sets are designed to sit on your existing teeth and gums and then can be adjusted later as your dental implants are added.

The Process of Fitting Dentures

When you and the staff at DC Dental Spa have determined dentures to be the best treatment option to restore your smile, there will be several steps necessary to create the final product. The actual style and the type of dentures agreed upon for your treatment will determine the length of the process, but for traditional full and partial dentures you can at least expect the following steps.

  • Dental Impressions

To make sure your dentures fit comfortably and securely to your gums, we will need to take an impression of your remaining teeth and gums to help create your appliance. If your situation requires the extraction of damaged or decayed teeth, we will wait to take impressions after the gums are completely to make sure we get a good impression and fit.

  • Wax Rims

To correctly measure the bite of your teeth, we will use a set of wax rims. When placing these rims in your mouth, we can actually gauge how the dentures need to be formed to duplicate a healthy bite once they are in your mouth.

  • Customized Teeth

In one of your initial appointments, we can allow you to customize your dentures. You can choose the size, shape, and shade of teeth to be used, so you can achieve the exact look you want for your smile.

After gaining all of details and the measurements to fabricate your dentures, we will send all the information and data to the dental lab responsible for creating the appliance. This time for this stage will vary depending your denture.

  • A Trial Fit

To help you get used to the idea of your new dentures will look and feel we will create a temporary set. This trial helps us make small adjustments to the fit and shape of the dentures before creating the final set.

  • The Final Fitting

When the mock-up set has been approved by both parties, the dental lab will complete the final partial or full denture set. You will then return to our office for your final fitting to make any last-minute adjustments needed. This final set will be fabricated using artificial crowns and a strong acrylic base. We will make sure your dentures feel comfortable and secure before you leave to prevent discomfort or soreness.

  • Check-Up Appointment

A follow-up appointment may be necessary if you feel uncomfortable with the fit of your new dentures. Either tight- or loose-fitting dentures can cause sores or swelling of your gums, influencing whether you want to wear them daily as needed. Making an appointment with us at the first sign of a problem is crucial in avoiding discomfort and helping your mouth get used to the dentures quicker.

The Proper Care for Your Dentures

Because your dentures are not surgically placed into the mouth, there is truly little discomfort expected with a proper fit. It is common for your upper dentures to feel tight, while your lower dentures fit looser. There are multiple adhesive products available for keeping dentures tightly in place. You can expect to wear your new dentures during waking hours, and then removing them at night for proper cleaning. When removed they should be brushed just like natural teeth and then soaked overnight. You should also brush your gums and tongue. Dentures will change your appearance and your chewing habits, which might cause you to feel slightly self-conscious in the beginning. It is important to be patient during this transition. Your dentures will feel more natural the more they are worn daily.
