Mini Dental Implants

Mini Dental Implants

Dental implants are an extremely popular tooth restoration method. Mini implants are a relatively new procedure designed to solve the shortcomings of dental implants. Smaller than a traditional implant, a mini implant is also known as MDI (mini dental implants) or small dental implants (SDI). They are made of the same material as traditional implants, which is titanium. The surface of the titanium which comes into contact with the jawbone contains or is sprayed with calcium phosphate to encourage bone growth.

Our educated and well-informed team at DC Dental Spa are experienced with mini dental implants. We have added this advanced technology to our friendly atmosphere, which helps us comfortably evaluate your problem to devise a solution quickly. Call 202-333-9282 for your initial consultation and let us help you decide if mini dental implants are an option for you to bring back your healthy smile.

Mini Dental Implants have changed the face of implant placement.  Unlike a full dental implant placement where several visits are required, MDIs also eliminate the need for surgery.  The development of long-term MDIs now allows us to place anchors in the jaw during one noninvasive treatment.  A current common use for Mini dental implants is the stabilization of dentures.  MDIs firmly anchor and secure the dental prosthesis, which means there it is no longer necessary to suffer with ill-fitting, loose dentures.

MDIs are also designed to eliminate bone grafting and to expedite treatment.  Full dental implants can require significant bone grafting and your recovery period.  The smaller size of mini dental implants means that no recovery period is necessary, and the denture can be fitted the same day.

What are the components of mini dental implants?

An MDI is a tiny dental implant (much like a screw) that is designed to act in place of a natural tooth root.  MDIs are made from titanium and contain calcium phosphate.  The design and structure of mini dental implants promotes quick healing and long-lasting results.  The head portion, or top, of the implant looks very much like a ball.  This ball will fit firmly into the retaining mechanism and together these structures hold the dentures at a designated level.  The dentures now will sit comfortably on the gum tissue and can withstand significant amounts of biting pressure and natural force.

What are the advantages of you receiving an MDI placement?

MDIs are innovative for people who are reluctant to have invasive dental surgery and for traditional denture wearers.  One huge advantage Mini dental implants have over full dental implants is that they offer a viable treatment choice for you if you have experienced loss of jawbone density.  Depending on the quality and density of your jawbone at the implant site, four of these mini dental implants may be placed at one time.  MDIs do not require invasive surgery, which makes MDIs a gentler option.  Mini dental implants also minimize cost. Full-sized dental implants can be expensive to place if many visits are required.  The most common use for mini dental implants is to stabilize a lower denture, but they can be placed anywhere in the mouth. Here are some of the other advantages associated with MDIs:

  • Clearer speech.
  • Easier chewing and biting.
  • Easier cleaning.
  • High success rate. Less discomfort.
  • No cutting or sutures.
  • No need for adhesives or messy bonding agents.
  • Firmer denture fit.
  • No slipping, wobbling or discomfort.
  • Permanent results.
  • Quick treatment time.
  • Better smelling breath.
  • Reduced costs.

The Mini Dental Implants Procedure

The whole mini dental implant placement procedure will take approximately one hour.  In the case of lower jaw implants, four MDIs will be placed about 5mm apart.  Prior to inserting any mini dental implants, we will use many diagnostic and planning tools to find the optimal location to place them. Here is a brief overview of the MDI placement procedure:

  • A mild anesthetic is administered for numbing purposes.
  • A small hole is drilled into the jawbone to situate each mini dental implant.
  • Each implant is screwed into place and tightened with dental, winged wrench.
  • A ratchet wrench is then used to fully stabilize the MDIs.
  • The denture is measured now and marked to indicate where the MDIs will fit.
  • Corresponding holes are then drilled into the denture tray to match the mini dental implant.

Once these modifications have been made to the dentures, it can be affixed to the MDIs.  Each MDI snaps into the designated spot on the denture, and the denture then rests snugly on the gum tissue.  Mini dental implants can hold the denture comfortably in a tight-fitting way for a lifetime.

No sutures are necessary, and no real discomfort is felt after the procedure.  After the procedure is complete, light eating can be resumed.  The denture can be removed and cleaned at daily. Mini dental implants will enhance the natural beauty of your smile and restore full functionality of your teeth.

Proper Care for Mini Implants

Your mini dental implants require the same care as your natural teeth. You need to continue to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and to floss at least once. Your gums will still be sensitive so use an extra soft-bristled toothbrush.

Losing your natural teeth can be traumatic, resulting in spoiling your confidence just as much as your smile. Mini dental implants allow you to speak and eat normally again. The staff at DC Dental Spa can tell you if mini implants are the best choice for you.

The Cost of Mini Dental Implants

If you are debating between traditional dental implants, mini implants, and other potential restorative treatments then you might want to consider the long-term price.

The cost of a mini dental implant can range from around $500 to $1,500 per tooth. Though the initial cost for mini implants may be enticing, the long-term costs can prove to be much greater than traditional dental implants.
